If Things Must Change, I must Change
Sep 11, 2023Change is the one essential part of life that we can all look forward to. From personal growth to societal shifts, change is a constant force that shapes our world. When faced with change, we have an opportunity to adapt and grow ourselves.
Change takes on a variety of forms: personal, professional, societal, or even relational. It can be exciting or daunting, and regardless of its nature, it is always constant. While change can be unsettling, it also brings opportunities for growth and improvement and an opportunity to truly thrive in a changing world. To do this successfully we must adopt a mindset that welcomes change as a chance for self-improvement. If there is an overarching theme to life it would be: "mindset is the key". The key to making us or breaking us. The key to propelling us forward or leaving us stagnant. John Maxwell said:” Change is inevitable and Growth is optional”. Whether fortunately or unfortunately, we can all look forward to change occurring in our lives but not all of us will choose to grow. Growth is a choice and we all get to choose whether or not to grow with the changing times.
Oftentimes what holds us back as humans is are innate desire for predictability and familiarity. We are all creatures of habit and we often resist change due to the fear of the unknown or the comfort we find in our routines. However, it's important to recognize that our comfort zones can become stagnant, hindering personal development. To truly evolve and adapt to change, we must cultivate resilience and a growth mindset.
Cultivating the mindset of “I must change” is first embracing self-awareness. By reflecting on our current habits, beliefs and behaviors we are able to identify the areas in our life where change is needed. Whether relationally, financially, spiritually or physically, we can all point to a possible growth area. In order to grow and expand there are three required steps we must prioritize: embrace the discomfort, define rituals and routines, and seek support.
Embrace Discomfort: If we can accept that change is inevitable we can also accept that discomfort is a natural part of the growth process. There is no growth without discomfort. By pushing your boundaries and stepping out of your comfort zone, you open doors to new opportunities and personal development.
Define Rituals and routines: Define clear rituals that align with the changes you want to make and the life you want to cultivate. Having clear rituals and routines will help you stay focused, disciplined, and motivated throughout the process.
Seek support: Don't be afraid to ask for help or seek guidance from mentors, coaches, or friends who have experience with the changes you're undergoing. We are not meant to do life alone. Supportive relationships can provide invaluable insights and encouragement.
Change is a beautiful and integral part of being human, and to thrive in a changing world, we must recognize that when things must change, we must change too. By embracing change we grow in self-awareness and resilience. Change is not just about adapting to external circumstances but also about evolving as individuals. By embracing change and actively working on personal growth, we can navigate life's ever-changing landscapes with confidence and resilience. So, when faced with change, remember: "If things must change, I must change."
