Physical Challenge: Walking 10k steps per day...Kinda
Jan 18, 2023Each year my husband and I think of physical challenges and mental challenges we want to pursue. This year we decided to get all the kids involved. All my kiddos, including my 4 year old, came up with a realistic mental and physical challenge for the year. Something they can work towards and feel good about accomplishing. For reference, my 4 year old said her physical challenge was to walk around the zoo without a stroller. One of my physical challenges was to walk 10k steps on the days where I am not working out. I am trying to work out 4 days a week and that includes yoga, my aerial class, strength training, and barre. If at the end of the week I have walked about 50k steps, I am happy with that. (that means, I am walking 5k steps on my workout days) I have noticed that my body has become accustomed to sitting more than movement, so for the sake of mental sanity and physical health, I decided to challenge myself in this way. For some people this may seem quite easy. For me, it won’t be.
So If you're looking for an easy way/ or challenging way (depends on the body and the person) to get fit and stay healthy, consider walking 10,000 steps per day. I looked into the research and found that walking 10,000 steps per day can have a wide range of benefits, including improved cardiovascular health, weight loss, and improved mood.
But it ain’t easy getting started.
Here are some ways to help get you started. First, set a realistic goal. 10,000 steps may seem steep for you, so it might be best to start with a smaller goal, such as 5,000 steps per day. Once you've reached this goal, you can gradually increase your number of steps until you hit 10,000. Next, make walking a part of your daily routine. Walk around your kitchen multiple times. Take your dog on a longer walk. Talk your kiddo on a walk. Just try to take a walk for at least 30 minutes each day. If you want to incorporate other activities such as jogging, running, or hiking into your daily routine, even better. To help with my movement endeavors I purchased an under desk treadmill that I now use everyday. Also, use a pedometer or a fitness tracker to track your progress. I purchased the FitBit Versa 2 last year when it was on sale. I think it was on sale because it is pastel pink. I personally hate pink but hey, frugal people can’t be choosey. Having a pedometer or fitness tracker will help you stay motivated and make sure that you're reaching your goals.
Finally, find ways to make it fun. Moving your body should be fun. We were given these beautiful bodies to be moved, so have fun doing it.
